Daily Dish 4.18

Last night had a slate of 9 games to kick off the week. No major upsets, but as the night wore on, there were some interesting scores and finishes.

Chisago Lakes 15 - Monticello 2: Welp, I think we have found our answer to the question asked in this week’s slate breakdown about CL. A team that notoriously dominates their area is back at it again. I thought maybe this was the year they took a step back after graduating some high caliber players the past two seasons, but, it does not seem to be the case. Reports telling me they were missing 3 senior starters for this game and still had no problem with a 9-0 lead at halftime and 15-2 final. They are contenders in Section 7 until proven otherwise.

Centennial 15 - OPC 1: Centennial started the season out with a bang playing conference rival, Maple Grove, in game 1. A tough, albeit exciting, 10-11 loss had all of us wondering if Centennial was “down” or Maple Grove was “up” this year. While OPC is probably not the caliber team to answer that question, Centennial ran to easy victory even without the help of their superstar attackman, Brol Scherman. Logan Adams and Colden Anderson picked up the slack with 9 and 7 points respectively last night. It looks like there is depth there at centennial, and with Brol in the line up, they should have a chance against anyone.

Blake 16 - Providence 13: What a wild game! Blake was up 4-0 early on, but, Providence hung around all game. I'll be honest I expected Blake to win this game easily, but, tip of the cap to Providence for sticking in the game and fighting til the end. Providence Attackman Sammy Lewis is a star. On any other team, he’s probably being talked about a lot more - he carries their offense and last night was no exception with 6 goals and 3 Assists. Blake was also down one of their offensive starters, Zach Weiner, who only played on man-up. It didn’t seem to have an impact on their ability to score, however, I am sure they were working through some things without him on their half field offense. Ended up being a really exciting game to watch on what was a slower night around the league.

Armstrong 20 - Totino Grace 12: Umm. This is an extremely high scoring game for MN High school lacrosse. Either we have been tipped on some high powered offenses or some really struggling defenses. I did not see this game so I cannot comment any further. But, that score surprised me. Specifically, TG scoring 12 on Armstrong, who supposedly was returning a strong defense this season.

Rochester Century 11 - Northfield 10: As a section 1 coach, want to tip my cap to Rochester Century. This team has been lean and trying to build for the last couple years and was 3-11 last year. A lot of games they were absolutely destroyed in. What do they do? Go out and beat the section 1 runner-up in their first game of the season. Awesome for them and their program. They still have a long ways to go, but, their group of 9th and 8th graders are the best they’ve ever had. Should be a team to watch in Section 1 over the next few years.
