Man-Up - “Quaker”
This Man-Up play is an effective way to get into a 3-3 with some motion to keep the defense off-balance. It starts in a 2-3-1 and moves into a 3-3 when the ball arrives to the X attackman. When your X Attackman pushes the side there are a few options available. He can:
Move the ball forward to the wing for a shot if the defense is late to rotate
Skip the ball through the defense to top center or back side wing if the defense collapses on the cutters
He could even turn the corner and finish if the D is worried about the passing
Once the ball moves to the wing - if there is no shot:
The top center guy should step into shooting space for a “one more” - step down shot
NOTES:
You’ll want your biggest shooters on the wings: lefty on left wing and righty on the right wing (as goalie sees it)
If the defense plays this well and and closes out on the shooters, you have morphed into a 3-3 where you can work from there for the rest of the man up opportunity or reset and run it again.
This play works both directions so you should run it in the direction of the strong hand of your X attack so they can be feeding with their dominant hand.
While this is being described as a play - at the higher levels, this can just be part of a scripted movement and make decisions based on your read of the man down defense that is being run.
