Summary

The top 4 teams all lose some major firepower, which may allow for some new teams to bubble up to the top.  Even if we stuck with the same 4 teams as last year – our source did not…which shows how volatile the section has become.

Now…we know there are other accounts out there talking MN lax.  Awesome – the community needs to be bigger and stronger.  One of the newer Instagram joints (Instagram:  mnlaxspot) had (2) teams from section 7 in their state top 10 (Andover @ 8 and Centennial @ 10).  We get making provocative picks to spur conversation (hand up on Rochester Century 2nd in Section 1, SWC 4th in Section 2), but two teams top 10 of the state is really pushing the envelope.

Section Preview

1 – Centennial (2022 2 seed in section, 13-3)

So…Centennial has the most coming back out of the top 4 teams (including their goalie), so they get the push over the rest of the section.

·       They lost 4 seniors total.

·       A little wild that a team losing a 72-point player (and 172 points with 3 players combined) has the most coming back, but that’s where we are in this section.

·       Brings back virtually anyone that played defense last year, besides a couple middies.

Source’s Source’s Notes:  probably team to beat in Section 7.  Lost very little-tough and scrappy but maybe a bit undisciplined. Have not seen them at tournaments as a team but they do have club players.

Lost:

Melia Haney – 72 points (D2 Frostberg)

Sydney Chance Farley – 52 points

Meghan Goodreau – 48 points

Returning:

’23 Ella O Hearn – 81 points

’23 Callie Cody – 58 points

’24 Peyton Brezney – GK 50.6%

2 – Andover (2022 1 seed in section, 15-3)

Lost 10 players to graduation, which includes a ton of production led by metro player of the year Claire Nelson and D2 contributor Sara Kaiser.  They’ll have to be anchored by their stud goalie and defense.

Source’s Source’s Notes:  Lost A LOT of high-powered offense; still have their goalie but will struggle. Lose to either Centennial or CP in section semis.

Lost:

Claire Nelson – 88 points (D1 Michigan)

Sara Kaiser – 41 points (D2 CSP)

Kara Stay – Defender (D3 UW Lacrosse)

Claire Lickfelt – 31 points

Mallory Eldem – 27 points

Returning:

’23 Elizabeth Schrubbe – 32 points (D3 College of St. Benedict’s)

’23 Emma Tammi – Defender (D3 UWEC)

’24 Merrill Delich – 27 points

’23 Eva Bock – GK 64.6% (!)

3 - Champlin Park (2022 4 seed in section, 8-7)

·       Anytime you lose a D1 commit and her two younger lax stud sisters, you…that’s…not going to be a good thing.

·       Losing your starting goalie on top of that is a tough spot, but they bring back basically all of players that filled the offensive void the Vangs left.

o   If they can figure out the goalie thing, they could push Centennial and Andover.  Imagine what it could have been.

·       We think we are gun shy on them, because we had them ranked so high last year and they completely let us down.

Source’s Source’s Notes:  Have some good 2024s who have played varsity since 7th or 8th grade.  May be a short bench but they always seem to pull something together, but I think they lose to Centennial in Section final.

Lost:

Kate Ferguson – GK 46.8 (D3 Wartburg)

’23 Fayedra Vang – 23 points in 8 games (D1 Liberty)

’25 Charlize Vang – 25 points in 8 games

Returning:

’24 Annabelle Johnson – 66 points

’24 Lauren Schindlbeck – 45 points

’23 Megan Peter – 32 points (D3 UWRF)

’25 Alayna Roehl – 26 points

’24 Ella Engstrom – 25 points

4 – Forest Lake (2022 3 seed in section, 13-2)

We tried really hard to put Forest Lake in the 3 spot over Champlin Park…but couldn’t quite justify it, losing their D2 goalie (64.9%) and three players that scored combined 207 points!

Source’s Source’s Notes:  Lost their very good goalie and 3 top scorers to graduation-likely a down year.

Lost:

Brooke Glumack – 82 points (D3 UWRF)

Megan Brown – Defender (D2 Upper Iowa)

Samantha Hayek – 63 points

Erin Brown – 62 points

Hannah Melander – GK 64.9% (!!) (D2 Northern Michigan)

Returning:

’23 Emma Halweg – 25 points

’23 Julia Hayek – Defender (D3 UWRF)

Chisago Lakes

·       went 13-2 in 2022.  Very easy schedule.

o   Their two losses in 2022 were 15-5 to Centennial and 12-5 to Champlin Park.

·       Lose a reasonable part of their production, but returns an equally reasonable part.

o   Their roster is insanely young (and large), so its worth noting that they might be someone to keep an eye on for next year cracking the top 4 in the section.

·       Their goalie is a 2025 – so they are set for a few years there.

Source’s Source’s Notes:  always plays tough but lost big to CP in Sections-will be a .500 plus team

Grand Rapids/Greenway - Shout to Grand Rapids for sending players down to Minneapolis for the Captains Cup.  Went 10-5, losing (2) 1 goal games and really only getting blown out once (versus Forest Lake 18-2).  Lose their goalie, so that’s going to be tough.

Anoka - Source’s Source’s Notes:  will struggle-only 3 wins last year-and lost a few offensive players

Blaine - Source’s Source’s Notes:  is not in good shape and will be scraping out wins

Coon Rapids - Source’s Source’s Notes: lost their only good players to graduation. Likely 2 win season?

Duluth - Source’s Source’s: Notes don’t know anything about them-can’t tell who they return

Hermantown - Source’s Source’s Notes: did not win a game last year

Spring Lake Park - Source’s Source’s Notes: won 2 games-team has struggled mightily past 2 years and I don’t see that changing.
