Section Preview
1 - Prior Lake (2022 1 seed in section, 14-2)
They lose a ton. They still have a ton. They bring up a ton. Year, after year, after year. They’re going to lose a ton next year. And still have a ton next year. And bring up a ton next year.
For the foreseeable future, PL will be in the mix for the section. However, 2025 GK Olivia Doyen set sail for IMG Academy this year, leaving a hole for the squad. However, looking at the off-season rosters, they might have a solution for this year (Ruby Burandt – D2 Mount Olive, DNP in 2022).
2 D1 commits (Meagan Sporney and Nina Winter), 1 that could be (Rachel Ward), 2 D2 commits (Kayleigh Sandell and Ruby Burandt), and a 2024 who shined last year, but is coming off an ACL (Sadie Chappuis). They also have a 2025 that is one of our top 2025s (in alphabetical order by last name):
· Abby Grove – Prior Lake
· Gisella Harder – SW Christian
· Frannie Primoli – Hill-Murray
· Aubry Zaun – Rosemount
Losing 3 senior starting defenders is tough, regardless of the goalie situation. They lose some big guns on offense too, but there are more ready made replacements for Prior Lake on offense. Defense will be young this year, so expect a scoring onslaught from PL to make up for that.
Their program is a classic example of Ted’s take that “there are 8th, 9th and 10th graders that are stuck behind juniors and seniors, waiting for their chance.” PL is FULL of 8th-10th graders waiting for their chance.
Lost:
1st Team All State Kendra Knutson – Defender (D2 UCCS)
Ava Schiltz – 59 points (D3 UW Lacrosse)
Lindsey Grove – 38 points (D1 Iona)
Gretchen McCann – Defender (D1 Eastern Michigan)
Jayne Bernick – 43 points
Josie Wilhelm – Defender
’25 Olivia Doyen – GK 47.3% (IMG Academy)
Returning:
’23 Rachel Ward – 46 points
’23 Nina Winter – 40 points (D1 Marquette)
’23 Megan Sporney – 32 points (D1 High Point)
’24 Sadie Chappuis – 35 points (recovering from a knee injury)
’24 Kayleigh Sandell – 7 points (D2 Grand Valley State University)
’25 Abby Grove – 20 points
’25 Madeline Sazama – Defender – Shout out UA 150
New:
’23 Ruby Burandt – GK DNP in 2022 (D2 University of Mount Olive)
2 – Edina (2022 2 seed in section, 13-2)
First – no grad years again. This makes us work way too hard. But we do.
Has a strong 2023 class – is this their last real shot at making state for a while? Has a trio of field players (Mary Velner – Marquette, Elle Busby - Xavier, Nicola Santoni – could play in college if she wanted) and the state’s best girls hockey goalie (Uma Corneia) back in the cage. Slightly worried about their overall depth: Only 1 player junior or younger scored over 4 points last year (Mia Maxwell). Lots of shoes to fill, especially next year.
Lost:
Cordelia Flemming – 65 points (D1 Columbia) – Absolutely crushing it at Columbia
Emerson Gorney – 59 points
Jane Kuehl – Defender
Haley Maxwell - Defender
Returning:
’23 Elle Busby – 46 points (D1 Xavier)
’23 Mary Velner – 46 points (D1 Marquette)
’23 Nicola Santoni – 45 points
’24 Mia Maxwell – 35 points
’23 Kelcie Meitz – Defender
’23 Kyla Willette - Defender
’23 Uma Corniea – GK 61.5% (!)
3 – Rosemount (2022 3 seed in section, 12-7)
They upset PL in the section finals last year, led by a HUGE senior class (8 players) – shout out PL’s stream for letting anyone watch the PL games, including playoffs…for free! 313/409 points (76.5%) were from 2022s! That’s A LOT of production!
3 2023s and 1 2024 on their roster on MLH. At least the 2024 is their goalie, but they also have a strong 2026 goalie in reserve.
Will their youngins fill the holes left? Has a mega strong 2025 class and 3 2027s that were on their MLH roster, so they will be banging heads with PL for foreseeable future – looking at you Aubry Zaun and your 40 points against your SSC schedule last year.
Lost:
Sayla Lotysz – 99 points (D1 Marquette)
Emma Duchscherer – 64 points (D1 Gardner – Webb)
Ava Whelan – 59 points (D3 Occidental)
Koral Hadac – 42 points (NAIA University of Cumberlands)
Peyton Gullickson – Defender (D3 UWEC)
Peyton State – Defender
Reese Christiansen – 27 points
Returning:
‘23 Nicole O’Neil – defense –came back later in bball season from knee injury. Was not at 100%
‘25 Aubry Zaun – 40 points
’25 Nessa Carrico – 16 points
’25 Ella Mills – 15 points
’25 Emma Theisen - Defender
’24 Lexi Carl – GK 49.2% (D3 College of St. Benedict’s)
4 - Bloomington Jefferson (2022 4 seed in section 9-6)
Jefferson is clearly below the top 3, but are they better than the rest? Pretty balanced attack with most of it returning. Their goalie is a 2024, so we like that.
Their core returners are (4) 2023s and (3) 2025s, so they need to bring some more to make up for the 2023 class leaving after this year and the almost nonexistent 2024 class (just their goalie). But for this year, they are our #4.
Lost:
Abigail Johns – 22 points
Grace Schuck – 14 points
Ruby Studer – Defender (D2 Lynn University)
Returning:
’23 Allison Wolfe – 29 points
’23 Emelia Lower – 22 points (D2 St. Leo)
’23 Hope Johnson – 19 points
’25 Beatrice Ruble – 15 points
’25 Molly Jensen – 14 points
’25 Kylie Jones – 13 points
5 – Eastview/Eagan (2022 5 seed in section 5-8)
Could be lurking for the #4 spot led by Jessica Wilhelm (D1 Bryant) and Carly Johnson (D1 Eastern Michigan).
Here’s the deal with EV/E: Lost their only rostered goalie to graduation and 5/6 primary contributors are 2023s. They didn’t lose much, but they need to find someone to put in the cage…and we need to see someone stepping up for next year. Way too many kids at Eastview and Eagan combine to not field a team in the midfield of the SSC.
