Summary

Section 5 is pretty solid through the top 7-8ish, considering that the largest school in the state didn’t even make our top 4.  Let’s break it down.

Section Preview

1 – BSM (2022 1 seed in section, 16-3)

BSM is our pick for 1 seed for Section 5 if the two older Vang sisters from Champlin Park aren’t allowed to play because of the transfer rules.  If they can’t, BSM will have the best JV team in MN too!  If they can, the BSM could be the belle of the ball.

BSM brings back commits at each position…not too bad (D1 Goalie, D1 Defender, D1 Midfielder, D2 Attack)!  They might be bringing in a 4th D1 commit in middie Faydera Vang.  They have a few more that have all the potential in the world to be either D1 or D2.

They participate in lots of off-season stuff: 10k lax, Chillax, EP Winter league, etc – you know we like that.

They’ve made some steady progression in the state tournament.  They even beat P-mac’s favorite charter school in the quarterfinals last year.

They’re in the running for our overall top team with Lakeville South and Chanhassen (of those we’ve talked about so far).  This fall, we were saying they were our #1 overall…we are softening just a little on this take, but they are 100% top 4 in the state.

Lost:

Tilly Wolfe – 88 points

Mary Zavoral – 33 points

Riley Weedman – 22 points

Fiona Lynch - Defender

Returning:

’23 Izzy Garvin – Defender (D1 Vermont)

’23 Brooke Nelson – GK 53.8% (D1 Lasalle)

’24 Julia Evens – 63 points (D1 Marquette)

‘24 Maggie Graczyk – 44 points

’24 Maddie Kalstas – 36 points (recovering from a knee injury – we don’t know when she will be back…we THINK this school season)

’24 Karsyn Elliott – 24 points (D2 University of Mount Olive)

New – maybe…pending transfer approval by MSHSL, Champlin Park and BSM:

’23 Faydera Vang – 23 points through 8 games at Champlin Park (D1 Liberty)

’25 Charlize Vang – 25 points through 8 games at Champlin Park

’26 Jun Vang – youngest sister to Fayedra and Charlize – should be able to play as she’s a 9th grader and didn’t play Varsity for Champlin Park last year.

2 - Maple Grove (2022 4 seed in section, 10-4)

MG is losing only 3 seniors and had a great run until getting bumped off by Blake – a fantastic learning experience for a very young squad that’s going to pay off.

Their goalie plays for Team 180 out of Colorado…we’re pretty sure…that’s wild.

Lost:

Dani Key – 23 points (D2 Northern Michigan)

Jamie Stolp – 23 points

Returning:

’23 Leah Muscatello – Defender (D2 University of Mount Olive)

’23 Ella Olson – 43 points

’25 Sosi Van Wyk – 40 points

’24 Megan Van Curler – 28 points

’24 Grace Erickson – 28 points

’23 Emma Crater – GK 52.3% (D2 Dominican College)

3 – Blake (2022 5 seed in section, 6-9)

Like Hill-Murray and SW Christian, we can’t quit Blake.  Ellie Morrison played in only 6 games, so we expect they’d have had a different story than their 6-9 record.  Erin Lee took up a lot of that slack, but it would have been nice to have two players like that crushing it.

Some people out there think we’re a public-school source…but it doesn’t really seem like it with all our private school love (BSM, Blake, SWC, and H-M).  We can say definitively we don’t like “charter” schools…

Do a lot of the off-season stuff that they should – we love that.

Lost:

Erin Lee – 82 points

Julia Blum – Defender

Ava Pihlstrom - Defender

Returning:

’23 Ellie Morrison – 31 points in 6 game (D1 Dartmouth Lacrosse and Hockey) – Shout out:  named New Balance All American Watch List.  She is a problem…doesn’t seem to like to pass, probably because she can get a missile shot off from just about anywhere, anytime (look at her goal to assist ratio):

·       2022 (6 games) = 27 goals, 4 assists

·       2021 (14 games) = 51 goals, 4 assists

·       2019 (11 games) = 11 goals, 0 assists

·       Career:  89 goals, 8 assists (yikes)

’24 Cynthia Lyman – 39 points

’23 Sally Countryman – 26 points

’25 Jada Chenitz – Defender

4 – Robbinsdale Armstrong (2022 2 seed in section, 11-4)

We missed the boat, the dock, and the lake with Robbinsdale Armstrong last year.  Hand up – not a good look.

Not under the radar like last year…HOWEVER, they did lose 4 of their last 6 games, including getting stomped by Wayzata 15-3 in section semifinals.

Lost:

Sydney Smith – 45 points (D2 CSP)

Ella Steinke – 24 points

Returning:

’23 Jenna Hamann – 61 points (D2 CSP)

’24 Erin Palony – 46 points

’24 Brielle Anderson – 29 points

’23 Claire Sondrall – 26 points (D2 Missouri Western)

’24 Lydia College – GK 48.6%

5 – Wayzata (2022 3 seed in section, 11-5)

You don’t give us grad years…so its tough for us to do a lot of in-depth review.  Rough start to the EP winter league, but love that you’re playing.  We did note a couple of players we expected to play in off season that weren’t so, we’re not super worried.  Katie Sikorski (D1 Akron) is going to light the lamp a lot.

6 – Breck (2022 6 seed in section, 8-7)

Has a D1 commit to Rutgers (Erin Duggan) a few other seniors and a couple of youngers that play club…along with at least 1 goalie that played last year.  Just not enough depth to compete against some of these schools/programs.

7 – St. Louis Park (2022 7 seed in section, 8-6)

Brings back their goalie and saw them in a few off-season events – good on them for putting in the off season work.
