This is a big one for the sport.
SMU has officially announced the addition of NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse, with the Mustangs taking the field in spring 2028. The first D1 men’s program in Texas is coming to Dallas—and jumping straight into the ACC.
Welcome to the neighborhood. Duke, Virginia, Notre Dame, Syracuse and North Carolina are on the schedule.
A few things to know:
Spring 2028 debut. There’s a roster to build and a head coach to hire. Things are about to move quickly.
Six teams in the ACC. SMU brings the conference to the threshold for an automatic NCAA Tournament bid, subject to NCAA requirements and approval.
$15 million already raised. With a $25 million fundraising goal by April 2027, there’s serious support behind this launch.
From our corner of the lacrosse world here in Minnesota, this is something to get excited about. We know how much time players, families and coaches put into building the game outside its traditional hotbeds. Seeing another major university invest in lacrosse gives more kids an opportunity to compete—and another reason to believe there’s a place for them at the next level.
The coaching hire, the first recruiting class, the chance to build something from Day One—there’s going to be plenty to follow here.
Texas has its first. Who’s got next?
Pony up. Let’s keep this thing growing.
