SMU has it’s Coach

SMU Has Its Guy? Jim Mitchell Expected to Lead the Mustangs 🐎

Alright, DTA Nation. Texas is getting Division I men’s lacrosse, and now it looks like we know who’s grabbing the reins.

According to Inside Lacrosse, Princeton offensive coordinator Jim Mitchell is expected to become SMU’s first head coach.

Mitchell has run Princeton’s offense since 2020, previously led Bellarmine, and helped build a high-powered offense at Rutgers. The guy knows his way around an offense. Now comes the opportunity to build an entire program.

SMU starts play in spring 2028, becoming the first NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse program in Texas and jumping straight into the ACC.

Welcome to Division I. Here’s your conference schedule. Good luck. 😂

The DTA take: We should be fired up about this—even up here in Minnesota. Another major university investing in men’s lacrosse means more opportunities for players and another big stage for the game outside its traditional footprint.

For the kids putting in work here at home, that matters. The college lacrosse map keeps growing.

Now we get to watch Mitchell build a staff, establish a culture, and put together that first roster. Inside Lacrosse identifies experienced transfers, particularly from the Ivy League, as a key piece of the launch.

2028 feels a ways off. Building a program from scratch? That clock is already moving.

Pony up. Let’s see what they build. 🔥
