GIRLS: Quarterly Section Check-In - Halfway
Things are getting spicey. Like a P-Mac salsa review spicey. Plus we decided to name all the sections. The teams are listed in the order we rank them currently.
Here is the way we see these Quarterly Checkins playing out. We’ll do one more at end of season, leading into the section tournaments. Then, we’ll do a Section Recap/State Preview, making 4 Quarterly Checkins (we love math). We have no idea what the boys are planning and don’t really care.
We see ourselves doing a series of State Recap articles, so we’ll see how that plays out. State Tournament Series. State Tournament Breakdown. We’re still workshopping ideas.
As always, if you’d be so kind – check us out on the paid side of the wall where we have game recaps, lists, rankings, our section previews, and other thoughts. Ted said if they get 3 more subscribers, we get a hat…so that would be nice.
Section 1
Name: “Fricking Lakeville South” Section.
Lakeville South is 5-0, including convincing to dominating wins over Chanhassen and Benilde St. Margaret’s.
Farmington is 4-3 and doesn’t have any section losses…yet (they play South on Monday May 8). Beat up on Mankato and New Prague. Still have South, North and Century for section games.
Lakeville North…ahhh…not really sure if we missed this one yet. 2-4 with section loss to South and win against Century. Still have Farmington and Owatonna left for section games.
Owatonna is currently at 5-1, only losing to South (no shame in that). Has already beat all Mayo 2X, Century 1X, Northfield 1X, Mankato 1X. Plays their conference each 2X and still has Duluth and North. Feels like this is the #4 seed, with a path there for the #3 seed.
We…we might have missed the boat on Century. Conference losses to North, Owatonna, and New Prague. Hand up on that one…until they prove us wrong for saying we are wrong. Honestly, New Prague should be higher than them, but we have to eat some crow with that pick.
Others of note: New Prague (3-3)
Section 2
Name: “The SW Metro” Section.
Chanhassen (5-2) Their two losses are in non-conference, non-section games (South 16-3 and Prior Lake 17-10). They are still the class of Section 2…but aren’t invincible.
Eden Prairie (4-3) and Minnetonka (7-1) play each other May 11. EP’s schedule has been more difficult than Tonka’s, but Tonka’s is turning, starting this week. Honestly, they are a coin flip despite the current records.
Southwest Christian/Jordan (8-0), aka SWC, continues to beat up on their schedule. How fun would it be for them to make a little noise in the section tournament? We love Katie’s idea for them to play Chaska – make it happens ADs.
Others of note: Chaska (2-3), Hutchinson (3-3), Delano/Rockford (3-3), Orono (4-3)
Section 3
Name: “What the Fuck” Section. Can we swear? We guess we just did.
Easily. Easily the most interesting section. Psycho? Schizophrenic? Dynamic? All of those.
Park (6-1) In the span of 5 days, Park lost by 2 @ Woodbury and then went to Stillwater and beat the Ponies 6-5. Still has SPA, Simley, East Ridge, and CDH as section opponents on the schedule.
CDH (6-2) has a high-powered offense, but has only one quality team in its win list, against Woodbury. Lost to White Bear Lake and Stillwater in non-section match ups. Biggest test is against Chanhassen May 15. Even though it’s a non-conference and non-section game…it would be a statement to get the win.
East Ridge (6-2). Sure they beat Woodbury, and that’s their best win. They lost to Stillwater (no issues), but then dropped one to Mahtomedi. Maht lost to Breck. So…yeah. Got CDH, Park, WBL and H-M in next 4 games, so we’ll have a strong take on East Ridge next time.
Woodbury (5-3) has two losses since our last quarterly report. They also beat Simley, Park and Forest Lake. Has BSM and Stillwater left…they’re kinda hard to predict…like this entire section.
Simley (2-5) made a tough schedule…but they need to start winning games against tougher competition. Lost to Blake, PL, Woodbury, Rosemount and H-M…only beat Hastings and Apple Valley/Burnsville. If they aren’t careful, Ted is going to start talking about the Stangler sisters (CDH) as the best sister combo.
Section 4
Name: “Does Andy Like Us” Section.
Stillwater (6-2) has our brow furrowed so much we’re going to need botox injections to deal with the wrinkles. They seem getable. Which is regrettable.
Our favorite club director who hangs out at Gentry (3-0) must be licking his chops. Just remember that we’ve been giving your squad credit the entire time, Andy. Come on, you like us, right? We’re not clueless like the other DTA rubes (editor: yes they are)
White Bear Lake (6-2), JP’s favorite girls team, is doing what its supposed to. Lost to Park and Stillwater, but beat H-M, CDH, and Woodbury. Got East Ridge and Mahtomedi left.
Let’s talk a little about Mahtomedi (6-2). They lost to Breck and CDH early back to back - that lost us on them. They’ve won 4 straight, including one against East Ridge. Doing what they are supposed to. We can’t really put them higher in the power rankings yet, but we are watching. Has H-M, Simley, and WBL in their last 5 games. McKenna Cunnington is on a 33/11/44 run right now.
Hill-Murray (4-3) might be righting the ship a little, but they have Blake on Tuesday. Its too bad that Frannie Primoli is out. Cate Kangas and Liv Godbout are doing their best to ship the ship afloat.
Section 5
Name: “The Mrs. PMac’s Source’s Favorite Section” Section.
BSM (6-1) pretty much dominated their games until big bad Lakeville South strolled on to campus. Might have been time to get a kick in the teeth.
Maple Grove (7-0) after the Centennial, Andover and Elk River/Zimmerman wins, their schedule got a little soft. Which is OK. Still has Armstrong, Blake and Champlin Park left. We’d bet the Blake game has been circled the entire spring for them.
Blake (5-2) we’d have preferred them to beat either BSM or Chanhassen to prove themselves. They have chances against H-M, Maple Grove, EP and Edina. If they win three of those…we’re taking a serious look.
Wayzata (5-3) with three losses in a row with a 4th staring them hard in the face against a pissed off BSM team. Life got hard for the crew from Wayzata.
Armstrong (5-1) doesn’t really have a quality win and lost their first chance against Centennial. We’re keeping them here with section games coming against MG and Wayzata, and non-section games against Champlin Park, Andover, and ERZ.
Section 6
Name: “Is this Section Stronger or Weaker Than Before” Section
Prior Lake (6-0) is STILL doing Prior Lake things. Beat Stillwater, Edina and Chanhassen. Still has Eden Prairie, Rosemount, and Lakeville South.
Edina’s (6-1) only blemish is against Prior Lake, a section foe. Has a tough 6 game finish, but only 1 section game in that stretch, against Rosemount. Did beat Jefferson 11-2 earlier in the season.
Rosemount (4-2) has only played and beat Jefferson for section games, 11-9. Honestly has the meat of their schedule left, with Elk River/Zimmerman, Edina, Lakeville South and Prior Lake.
Bloomington Jefferson (5-3) seems to have the hold on the #4 spot in the section unless Eastview/Eagan (2-5) does something silly like run the table.
Section 7
Name: “Is Anyone For Real Here” Section
Centennial is 5-1 and beat Andover and Armstrong. Still has Champlin Park and ER/Z.
Andover (5-2) got beat by MG big time and then lost a close game to Centennial. Best win is an early 5-4 win over ER/Z. Has Champlin Park, Wayzata and Armstrong on the list yet.
Champlin Park (6-1) has run up the score 6X in their wins. Next 4 games are their chance to tell us they are for real with games against Andover, Centennial, Armstrong, and ER/Z. We are THIS close to hopping back on your bandwagon.
Chisago Lakes (6-0) is STILL UNDEFEATED. The SWC of Section 7? Toughest games left are against Mounds View and Forest Lake. There is a definite path for them to go undefeated…excited to watch it unfold for them!
Section 8
Name: “This is Elk River’s to Lose” Section
We got out a little over our skis not picking ER/Z to win this. That is our bad. Elk River/Zimmerman (4-2) lost 1 goal games to Andover and Maple Grove, and then boat raced everyone else. Hopefully getting Rosemount rescheduled, and then have Centennial, Champlin Park and Armstrong in the last 4 games of the season
STMA (3-3) Sure…the lost to Minnetonka, Wayzata, and Edina, but those are all non-section games. They beat Buffalo (ugh) and has Moorhead and Sartell/SR left as section games. They deserve the #2 slot right now.
Buffalo (4-4) has…not looked great the past few weeks. Three losses in a row, against STMA, Hop (not that Hop, but our Hop), and Eden Prairie. They’d better get a dub against Becker and SSR, because their other games are against Edina, Minnetonka and CDH. Credit for the tough games, but need to win the winnable games.
Moorhead (3-3) We were hoping for a little more out of the Spuds and maybe they’re trying to find their way. Their next three games are going to be tough (STMA, Lakeville North, Lakeville South), but then should be able to win their last 4. If they can pick off STMA, that would be a coup.
