Game Notes 5/9: What Just Happened?
We had a funnier title to this article about going home because…of the state you’re in. Not a great joke for HS sports…but it sums up the state of the games last night.
Close games and upsets all over.
Bloomington Jefferson beat Chanhassen 12-9
Chan is not who we thought they were…unless they are pulling an all-time rope a dope on everyone. Listen – we saw paths for losses to Lakeville South and Prior Lake. Not sure we saw losses as convincing as they were. We did NOT see Bloomington Jefferson beating them.
Jefferson is now 6-3, but their “best” win was against Eastview/Egan 13-9. Regardless, they’ve entered the chat and how have their eyes on a #3 seed in Section 6, because….
Elk River/Zimmerman beat Rosemount 9-7
Rosemount might be who we thought they were…which is a team that’s a year away. Not having your top returning goalie, who would have been one of your few upper classmen return hurt. This team is getting all the lumps now, because they’re going to be a juggernaut for at least the next 2 years, and probably a few after that.
However – they are still a top 15ish team that plays in South Suburban Conference, made state last year, pushed South in the state semifinals game, and took Stillwater to OT this year. That makes it the best win of the season, by far, for ER/Z. They’re 6-2 and have a commanding lead for #1 seed in Section 8. They still have Centennial, Champlin Park (because – they beat Andover on Monday) and Armstrong.
Hopkins beat Wayzata 9-8
Tailspin doesn’t quite do just to Wayzata’s last 5 games. When we said things were going to start moving fast for them, we had this game penciled in. They close the season with Armstrong, Edina and Andover.
We threw a note about Hopkins looking plucky. Yeah, guess so. They’re 4-4 and they’ve now beat Wayzata, Buffalo, and Moorhead (more on them later). They have STMA next, with winnable games for rest of season. They have tons of hurdles in Section 5, but talking about Hop is great for the game.
Moorhead beat STMA 11-10
First win over STMA in program history. is that a good story? Moorhead are 4-3 and come down to the metro to play both Lakeville squads this weekend. After that, things lighten up for the Spuds and them playing a few of the top programs may be proving beneficial.
STMA – we cannot quite get you figured out yet. You’re 3-4. Have losses to Wayzata (not looking as good now), Tonka (more on them), Edina, and Moorhead. You’ve beat Buffalo, Monti and St. Louis Park. You have Hop coming up soon (suddenly WAY more interesting) and EP. You also have 3 winnable games. Tough to have a loss over a section foe though and get ranked over them - need lots of help.
Section 8 seeding is getting VERY interesting. Lets hope that MSHSL is actually paying attention.
Edina beat Minnetonka 17-3
Ouch.
Listen. Edina is for real. They are part of the 3 team second tier (Lakeville South is a tier by themselves, then tier 2 is Prior Lake, BSM and Edina). But 17-3? Tonka vs EP is VERY interesting tomo. We hope we didn’t miss the boat on you again Tonka.
Hey - its cool to talk about the legacy of Blake and Edina or how Prior Lake was crushing it on the years book ending covid, but do you know what’s better? Having all those stories AND talking about legit upsets, many by teams that don’t get any publicity outside of the DTA nation. Let’s go!
